When we are in the tavern,
We do not know the shadow of death.
But we embark unto playing,
To feasting and happiness.
Whoever spends silver here
Will have his cup forever refilled.
I will lead you into the tavern,
Listen to the words of my tongue!

Someone drinks in solitude,
Someone is lost in temptation.
From those who play unsafe,
Some go back completely naked.
Someone clothes oneself better,
Someone gives away the last cloak.
No one is afraid of death,
All are cup-lovers here.

The servant drinks, the master drinks,
The sister drinks, the brother drinks.

The lady drinks, the lord drinks,
The priest drinks praising God.

The soft one drinks, the hard one drinks,
The white one drinks, the black one drinks.

The elf drinks, the dwarf drinks,
The orc drinks, the demon drinks.

The bearer of the ring drinks,
The old linguist drinks.

The mortal folks drink,
Countless folks drink!
In taberna quando sumus,
Non curamus quid sit humus,
Sed ad ludum properamus,
Cui semper insudamus.
Quid agatur in taberna,
Ubi nummus est pincerna,
Hoc est opus ut queratur,
Si quid loquar, audiatur.

Quidam ludunt, quidam bibunt,
Quidam indiscrete vivunt.
Sed in ludo qui morantur,
Ex his quidam denudantur,
Quidam ibi vestiuntur,
Quidam saccis induuntur.
Ibi nullus timet mortem,
Sed pro Baccho mittunt sortem

Glossary:

This is a loose translation of the famous medieval drinking song that is aimed at capture the spirit of the text and make references to Tolkien's material (guruthos, enquantuva, peth lammen, úsahtie, kormakolindo, lambengolmo, únótima).

Obviously, the bibit-lines are not literal translations and one can line up a lot more of them.

Interestingly, the text requires one to commit to either the exclusive or the inclusive form of 'we'. I chose the exclusive form because the narrator seems to describe the tavern life to outsiders.

*sendasse 'tavern' from S. sennas 'guesthouse' (RC:523)
*nuruþosse from S. guruthos 'dread of death, death-horror, shadow of death'
*ala-varna 'unsafe', modeled after alasaila
*aqua-parna 'completely naked'
*Erundur 'priest, Eru-servant'
